Next generation vision correction surgery beyond LASIK and LASEK

What is SMILE LASIK?

SMILE LASIK is vision correction surgery that uses a superfine femtosecond laser (Visumax) to penetrate the corneal surface without making a corneal flap (like LASIK) or removing the corneal epithelium (like LASEK) to correct the lens shape with the desired thickness inside the cornea.

Why is SMILE LASIK an excellent surgical option?

SMILE LASIK is a safer choice.

Clinical studies are now reporting that SMILE LASIK may be the most accurate and safest option because LASIK and LASEK leave the patient with only their posterior cornea, whereas SMILE LASIK leaves both the anterior and posterior parts of the cornea to maintain a more stable and stronger corneal structure which is ideal if there is a high chance of external impacts, bumps, or trauma.

SMILE LASIK is a more accurate option.

Because SMILE LASIK does not expose the inside of the cornea like LASIK and LASEK, a more precise operation is possible without increased risk of thermal damage to the cornea or other errors caused by drying the exposed cornea.

SMILE LASIK is more convenient.

Because SMILE LASIK is the best option for preserving corneal integrity, it is less painful than LASIK and LASEK. This also makes it a better choice for active people: facial washing, showering and wearing make-up are all possible the day after surgery.

SMILE LASIK causes less dry eye symptoms.

Compared with LASIK, SMILE LASIK causes fewer disturbances to the corneal nerves which reduces your risk of dry eye symptoms.

Even if you have been turned down for LASIK in the past, you may be suitable for SMILE LASIK

SMILE LASIK is recommended for:

  • people who are worried about bumping or knocking their eyes after surgery

  • people who are firefighters, soldiers, police officers, or athletes

  • people who want to return to daily activities as soon as possible after surgery

  • people who are concerned about dry eye symptoms after surgery

  • people who want to have vision correction surgery with the least amount of discomfort

Demonstration of Live SMILE LASIK Surgery

Twenty members from the Carl Zeiss Intraocular Lens and Surgical Ophthalmology Facility of Germany, along with 120 ophthalmologists from the Asia Pacific Region, visited NUNEVIT Eye Center in 2014.

They observed Director Ryu Gyuwon’s live demonstration of an actual SMILE LASIK operation on a patient in real time, and gave excellent feedback and reviews.

Live SMILE LASIK Surgery?

Only a surgeon with exceptional experience, competence, and confidence could undertake this kind of demonstration with so many experts from around the world closely observing.

Director Ryu Gyuwon’s Lectures

  • In 2014, NUNEVIT Eye Center and Carl Zeiss Korea co-hosted the Asia-Pacific Refraction Laser Symposium in Busan.

  • “The benefits of choosing SMILE LASIK to overcome dry eye syndrome” at the 2014 Asia-Pacific Refraction Laser Symposium.

  • “Laser settings for better SMILE LASIK surgery results” at the 2016 Thailand Asia Pacific Refractive Laser Symposium.

  • “Preforming Korea’s first SMILE LASIK procedure using Cassini” at the Singapore Asia-Pacific Refractive Laser Symposium in 2017.

Stem Cell SMILE LASIK

PRP is the treatment of choice for people suffering from dry eye syndrome or delayed surgical recovery.

NUNEVIT Eye Center uses the SmartPrep Autologous Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) system’s customized eye drops to maximize surgical outcomes. The treatment is considered to be very safe.

What is PRP Therapy (Autologous donation of Platelet Rich Plasma)?

PRP therapy is a type of personalized eye drops which are specifically designed to help post-operative recovery by shortening the recovery period and reducing symptoms of dry eye syndrome. The patient’s own blood is collected through the same process as a regular blood test and then centrifuged to extract platelet-rich plasma components, called PRP. To make the personalized eye drops therapy, the PRP are added to a solution of vitamin A and other ingredients known to help to heal wounds and inflammation. NUNEVIT Eye Center uses a highly advanced system called SmartPrep PRP Harvest® Technology to extract PRP9 and stem-cell PRP which ensures that the PRP drops we produce are even more beneficial than standard PRP drops.

What are the benefits of autologous PRP Eye Drops?

  • Accelerated and enhanced healing

  • Reduced inflammation

  • Symptomatic improvement of Dry Eye Syndrome

  •  Reduction in pain

  • May restore the corneal epithelial surface in patients with corneal ulcers

What is the SmartPrep PRP system?

SmartPrep PRP Harvest® Technology's serum separation equipment comes from the US. It is a hygienic, safe, and fully tested system for producing autologous PRP serum with the highest possible concentration of platelets. The equipment has passed the US FDA and the KFDA’s very comprehensive approval process which means it is very safe.
