Eye aging starts in your 40s, so that is when you really need to take care of your eye health

People in their 40s may think that blurry vision is just an aging issue. But there are other age-related eye conditions such as cataracts, glaucoma, and macular degeneration, which need early detection and treatment to minimise complications. So we advise you to have an eye examination at least once.

When do I need to come in for an eye health check-up?

  • If your eyesight is gradually failing (especially when you close one eye and see a difference in your vision quality )

  • If you see something floating in front of your eyes

  • If you see something flashing in your peripheral vision

  • If you have increasing blurriness around lights

  • If you have a disease which effects your blood circulation such as diabetes, hypertension or arteriosclerosis

  • If you are experiencing double vision

  • If you frequently have watery eyes, discharge, redness, or eye pain

  • If you are often exposed to sunlight

  • If your parents or siblings have a medical history of diabetes or glaucoma

  • If you smoke

What is the relationship between presbyopia and cataracts?

Presbyopia is caused by the aging process, when the elasticity of the lens of the eye becomes weaker. Cataracts are also age related and occur when the crystalline lens in the eye gradually becomes cloudy. Cataracts are not directly related to presbyopia, but they do often occur around the same time in life so it is quite common to be diagnosed with both. In which case, treatment with multifocal intraocular lens could be an effective treatment option for both conditions.
