Do I already have presbyopia?

Everyone asks themselves, but don’t know what the next step is….

What changes happen in our eyes with age?

Presbyopia is the loss of near focusing ability that normally occurs with age. Age-related changes occur within the proteins in the crystalline lens, which acts like the lens of a camera within the eye, making the lens harder and less elastic over time. Age-related changes also take place in the muscle fibres surrounding the lens. With less elasticity, the eye has a harder time focusing up close. Most people first begin to notice the effects of presbyopia sometime after 40, when they start having trouble seeing small print up close.

Presbyopia begins this way.

Here are some initial presbyopia symptoms that appear slowly.

  • Visual fatigue that makes reading and other near vision tasks less comfortable and more tiring than previously

  • Gradually noticing blurry night vision and becoming more sensitive to light and glare

  • Finding it becoming more and more difficult to see fine details for work

  • Vision becomes blurred from time to time while working or during daily life

  • Holding books, newspapers and cell phones further from your eyes when reading

When does presbyopia usually start?

The timing and degree of presbyopia varies depending on your degree of myopia or hyperopia, type of work, and lifestyle. People with moderate myopia may be able to see smartphones and books without glasses for quite a long time. On the other hand, people with high myopia often need reading glasses early. If you have done lot of detailed work over a long time, there is a high chance that you may experience presbyopia early.

People younger than 40 are now sometimes experiencing similar symptoms because of bad habits like looking at smartphones for a long time.

If you start to feel presbyopia symptoms, we recommend you have an eye exam!

Because presbyopia is the first noticeable stage of your eyes’ aging process, there is a chance that there may be other accompanying eye diseases such as cataracts, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy which are important to diagnose and begin treatment early.
