Presbyopia in the 40s

IFor people in their forties with myopia or hyperopia without cataracts, we often recommend corneal laser surgery to correct myopia or hyperopia while also addressing your presbyopia.

CUSTOM-Q Presbyopia Correction

Combination of CUSTOM-Q mode and micro-mono vision using LASIK

CUSTOM-Q

During LASIK procedures At NUNEVIT Eye Center, we make the corneal flap using state-of-the-art VisuMax equipment. Then corneal reshaping is done using the EX500’s Custom Q approach which is a highly sophisticated method of finely shaving the shape of the cornea aspherically using an F-CAT mode. We use this process so that the center and the curvature of the edge of the cornea are different which deepens the depth of focus, and enables both near and far vision, which is as close as possible to natural vision

Micro-Mono Vision

Micro Vision is a procedure in which the dominant eye is corrected for distance vision and the other eye is corrected for near vision. At NUNEVIT Eye Center we often recommend the Micro-Mono Vision method because it widens the range of sight in the middle distance which makes vision more smooth and natural.

SMILE LASIK in your 40s

SMILE LASIK in your 40s

If you are in your 40s and are considering SMILE LASIK, then the combination of SMILE LASIK and Micro-Mono Vision surgery may be an excellent option for you. SMILE LASIK does not require a corneal flap, so it is suitable for people who are concerned about dry eye syndrome, or those who enjoy outdoor activities such as swimming, skiing and scuba diving.

For people in their 40s who are thinking about presbyopia correction

Why should you consider presbyopia surgery in your 40s

Presbyopia surgery corrects refraction errors and calibrates the focal point to optimise close range vision as well as long distance vision. The aim is to slow down the need to wear glasses or contact lenses, or at least make you less dependent on them.

If you need to focus on close up objects for a long time

Even after presbyopia surgery, you may still need reading glasses for up-close work. Or if for distance vision, such as night driving, you may need driving glasses.

Recovery and adaption time

The day after surgery, you will probably be able to go about your daily activities, but full recovery may take more than 2 weeks. To make sure you stay comfortable during your recovery, it is important to take things easy in your daily life and at work and to use artificial tears regularly to reduce the effects of dry eye symptoms.

Presbyopia with accompanying cataracts in the 40s

If cataracts are present alongside presbyopia, you may consider multifocal intraocular lens implantation as a treatment option.

Presbyopia Correction in the 50s and 60s

For people in their 50s and 60s with cataracts and presbyopia, treatment with presbyopia correction multifocal intraocular lens cataract surgery is a great option for treating both disorders in the same procedure.

What is multifocal intraocular lens surgery?

Cataract surgery requires a synthetic intraocular lens to be implanted in your eye. Conventional intraocular lenses hve a single focus which makes it hard to see things up-close after surgery. Now multifocal intraocular lenses are an excellent option for creating greater depth of focus so you can see near and intermediate objects better. It is ideal for treating both presbyopia and cataracts in a single procedure.

  • There will be no need for further cataract surgery

  •  Anaesthetic eye drops are used before surgery so you will not feel uncomfortable during the procedure

  • You will be able to do most activities the day after surgery, but it may take some time to experience completely comfortable vision

  • Intraocular lenses are semi-permanent and have been proven safe in the human body

What are the advantages of multifocal intralocular lens surgery?

Multifocal intraocular lens surgery is not a simple surgical procedure; it must be performed by skilled and highly experienced surgeons.

NUNEVIT Eye Center’s multifocal intraocular lens surgery is performed by specialised eye surgeons with 15 to 20 years of experience. They are able to select the right intraocular lens after careful and accurate eye examination and by considering your individual needs.

Multifocal Intraocular Lens Surgery

Patients with presbyopia in their 50s and 60s often have serious myopia or hyperopia as well as cataracts. Presbyopia correction multifocal intraocular lens cataract surgery is a good option to treat cataracts and presbyopia in a single procedure

Most Popular Multifocal Intraocular Lenses

At NUNEVIT Eye Center we often recommend multi-focal intraocular lenses and carefully select an appropriate type of implant according to our patient’s individual needs.

AT LISA tri (Carl Zeiss Germany)

LISA tri lens is a high preforming multifocal intraocular lens made by Carl Zeiss, a German optical company. It uses SMP-technology (smooth microphase technology), which is applied to hydrophilic optic material with a precise semiconductor manufacturing process, so that the surface of the lens is smooth which reduces scattering and spreading of light.

ReSTOR Aspheric (Alcon, USA)

The aspheric ReSTOR® features an apodized diffractive optical structure with multiple focal points using multiple steps on the anterior surface of the lens. The gradual shortening of step heights toward the periphery of the diffractive zone from 9 or 12 concentric spheres at a maximum of 1.3 microns to a minimum of 0.2 microns at the 3.6 mm diffraction portion of the centre of the lens delivers sharp vision in all lighting conditions.

ReSTOR Toric (Alcon, USA)

ReSTOR Art Lens uses the same diffractive optics and apodization principles as the whole ReSTOR Lens family to provide cataract treatment and astigmatism correction in a single procedure. These ReSTORE Art Lens delivers crisp, clear distance vision while supplementing near vision. Because this technology has exceptional rotational stability and a wide range of correction, it is used in about a quarter of all cataract patients with severe astigmatism.

Lentis Comfort (SwissMed, Switzerland)

Unlike conventional multifocal intraocular lenses, the Lentis Comfort Lens is a refraction-type multifocal IOL which was developed with an emphasis on excellent visual acuity for the intermediate and distance ranges. The Lentis Comfort enhances contrast sensitivity and minimizes light blurring in the middle distance (50 to 60cm) to support every day activities such as using the computer, handling a smartphone, shopping, golfing or driving. Therefore, weak reading glasses may be needed for small letters or very close work.

Tecnis Symfony (Abbot Vision, USA)

The TECNIS Symfony® Continuous Focus Lens merges two complementary technologies: Echelette diffraction technology, which extends the range of vision and improves clarity; and Achromatic Technology, which corrects chromatic aberration for improved contrast enhancement and more natural vision.

NUNEVIT Eye Center’s Guide to Selecting the Right Intraocular Lens

We know the most appropriate intraocular lens for the best close, intermediate and distant vision. Along with the results of a very comprehensive eye exam, we need to know about your priorities and lifestyle to help us carefully select the right intraocular lens to meet your needs.

  • For people who prioritize close (30 ~ 40cm) and long distance vision, intraocular lenses are a cheaper option than triple multifocal lenses, but they can be problematic for vision in the middle distance.

  • If you prioritize excellent intermediate distance vision (50 ~ 70cm) as well as long distance, there is also the option of the intraocular lens which is often cheaper than the triple multifocal options.

  •  NUNEVIT Eye Center is an Asia Pacific Reference Clinic of Precision PreSPI Lens.

  • Many people who prioritize excellent close up vision and have strong astigmatism, choose to have an intraocular lens implant.

Note to people in their 50s and 60s who are considering presbyopia surgery

Most people in their 50s and 60s find daily life quite convenient after presbyopia surgery. But some people are more sensitive to symptoms such as light blur than others, which may mean that they are less happy with the initial results of their surgery. These symptoms usually continue for one to three months before natural vision returns. However, some patients continue to experience postoperative myopia, hyperopia, or astigmatism for a long time; and in these cases, extra corneal laser surgery may be required. If you have retinal disease, you can access excellent treatment at our retina center.
