There is no reason to be afraid of intraocular lens implantation!

Intraocular lens (IOL) implantation is an excellent option for people with high myopia, hyperopia, and/or a very thin cornea.

IOL implantation uses very sophisticated artificial lenses which are inserted into the eye.

It is not uncommon to have doubts about this procedure, however has been proven to be is safe and has been practiced for over 20 years with most patients very happy with their outcome. If you have both presbyopia and moderate to severe hyperopia, this may be the only viable option for clear vision and minimal reliance on glasses after refractive surgery.

The advantages of Intraocular Lens Implantation

With 20 years of clinical results, the safety of the IOL materials and the implant procedure has been well documented.

In patients with high-myopia or ultra-high myopia, this procedure can reduce the incidence of regressions, corneal aphasia, dry eye syndrome, and corneal opacity which is more common after other corneal surgeries.

Compared to high-myopia glasses, image distortion is quite small. Because the corneal surface is not touched, this procedure provides excellent quality of vision after surgery.

On the small chance that there is a problem, this procedure is easy to reverse by removing the lens.

NUNEVIT Eye Center’s reliable intraocular lens insertion

  • We are able to perform both anterior and posterior intraocular lens insertion surgery based on what is best for your individual needs. Our surgeons have received ICA / TICL Global Expert Surgeon of USA STAAR and OPHTEC Altiflex Best Skilled User Certification from the Netherlands.

  • The anterior segment of the eye is very accurately assessed by two different anterior segment tomographies (Pentacam and CASIA).

  • Glaucoma screening and retinal examination are used to ensure safety after surgery.

Arti-Lens

Why NUNEVIT Eye Center is So Confident in Arti-Lens Implantation

NUNEVIT Eye Center is an Arti-Lens reference clinic that uses the entire Arti-Lens product line.

  • Why Director Park Hyo Soon decided to use Arti-Lens

  • Experience with many difficult cases using Arti-Lens

  • History of close cooperation with OPHTEC

Less common in in Korea, the Arti-Lens was developed by OPHTEC in the Netherlands in 1986. This particular lens is carefully fixed to iris and requires a high degree of skill, experience, and know-how from the surgical team. Its safety has been proven many times in patients over the past 30 years.

Arti-Lens Product Line

Artiflex

Artiflex is the most widely used lens in the Arti-Lens product family and can safely correct refractive errors within 15 diopters of myopia and astigmatism. Artiflex is partially made of silicone which makes it flexible so it is implanted ‘folded up’ which means that the corneal incision can be kept small (3.2 mm) for a faster recovery time. Altiflex is widely used in Europe and Japan. After several years of clinical use in Europe it achieved European CE approval in 2005.

Artisan

Artisan is the first traditional Arti-Lens with 30 year’s history treating myopia, astigmatism, and farsightedness. One major advantage of the Artisan lens is that it can correct up to -23.5 and +12 dioptres. This which has the widest range of correction can be used to treat ultra-high myopia. The Artisan lens is a very thin non-flexible plastic lens made of PMMA, which t is completely accepted by the body. Because Artisan is a solid lens with a diameter of 5-6mm, a wider incision is required during surgery, but it is certainly the lens of choice if your eyes are not compatible with the Altiflex option.

Artiflex Toric, Myopic Astigmatism, Hyperopic Astigmatism

Artiflex Toric is the best choice for patients with high myopia with high astigmatism. One of the biggest advantages of this lens is that it is fixed to the iris to help correct astigmatism of a specific direction and that the surgical effect is well maintained over time. The lens material is soft and supple so that surgery requires minimal incision but is still able to correct high astigmatism of -5 diopters.

NUNEVIT Eye Center’s Arti-Lens Implantation Surgery

  • Our surgeons, with 20 years of Arti-Lens surgical experience, are able to perform highly accurate, well centered implantations.

  • We use anterior corneal laser tomography for a very accurate anterior.  We also use a pre-operative simulation process to map lens positioning.

  • We carefully select the best lens to match your eye condition and life style.

  • If you have been told you cannot undergo IOL implant because you have shallow anterior chamber depth, a thin and short full-diameter model of Artisan 202 may possibly be used to ensure surgical success.

Aqua ICL

The AQUA Implantable Collamer Lens is implanted behind the iris and in front of the patient’s natural lens, to treat refractive errors such as myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. It is made of a pliable patented material which permits surgeons to replace a patient’s natural lens with minimally invasive surgery. It is a human-friendly and optically very stable polymer of collagen and HEMA called COLLAVER ™ which is approved by the US FDA.

Aqueous fluid circulates in the eyes. Some types of ICL require patients to undergo an iridotomy, which is when a is hole made in the iris with a laser to let fluid flow properly from the back chamber of the eye to the front chamber which prevents build-up of pressure within the eye after surgery.

The Aqua ICL has been upgraded four times over the past 20 years. It now has a 360 μm fine hole at the center of the lens to enables the aqueous liquid to flow of smoothly within the eye and eliminates the need for an iridotomy (CentraFLOW Technology). The hole also decreases the likelihood of other complications such as cataracts.

Surgical Procedure

Advantages of Aqua ICL

  • ICL has a wide treatment range from mild to very-high myopia, which makes refractive surgery available to people who were once rejected.

  • Aqua ICL does not cause or exacerbate dry eye syndrome.

  • As this procedure only requires a small 3 mm incision at the side of the cornea, recovery time is fast, and you can resume normal activities the day after surgery.

  • There is little fluctuation or stabilization time so you can safely enjoy sports and leisure activities within 1 week of surgery.

  • The implant is not visible from the outside (invisible specificity).

  • The surface of the lens is UV protective to protect your eyes from the sun’s harmful rays.

  • ICL surgery is reversible, so if there are any side effects, the artificial lens can be easily removed.

  • There will be less night vision phenomena such as haloes and starbursts, which may be significant and permanent in LASIK for high myopia.
