What is macular degeneration?

Light rays are focused onto the retina then transmitted to the brain and interpreted as the images you see. The macula is a very thin layer of tissue at the center of the retina that receives light like a camera film. As some people get older, the cells of their macula begin to deteriorate which causes the gradual loss of pinpoint vision accuracy and affects their ability to read, recognize a face, and see fine detail. When this condition occurs in the 50's it is called 'age-related macular degeneration', and it is a very common cause of adult blindness in developed countries. We are seeing the number of patients in Korea gradually increasing.
